Meth Community Response Alliance

In response to the rapid proliferation and growing popularity of methamphetamine, Washoe County's Meth Community Response Alliance first met on September 26, 2005 and quickly developed their mission, which is, "Develop a community response to the meth problem in Washoe County."

The Meth Community Response Alliance meets 6 times a year and has developed a Community Call to Action that includes the following areas of concern:

  • Expand substance abuse treatment capacity to include the availability of treatment within 48 hours of first contact.
  • Provide information, education, and prevention on methamphetamine to all children and families in Washoe County.
  • Work with law enforcement to insure that they have all of the tools and resources necessary to deal with methamphetamine and other illicit drug problems in the community.

Based on the Community Call to Action, the Meth Alliance has developed several working committees whose purpose is to meet the goals of the Community Call to Action. These committees are:

  • Treatment: This committee is working on ways to make treatment services more immediately accessible to those in need.
  • Prevention:  This committee is collaborating on a project with the Washoe County School District that has the potential to reach thousands of students.
  • Drug Endangered Children (DEC):  This committee is working with local community leaders to put together a standard response for helping and intervening with children who are found to be in drug using or drug manufacturing homes.
  • Data Collection: This committee is "making the case" for the meth problem through data.  In addition, data is being collected to help the Alliance understand what drugs are being used in Washoe county and how to respon to those upcoming trends.
  • Law Enforcement: This committee is working on jail re-entry issues to help stop the revolving door between the community and the Washoe County Jail.
  • Committee Chairs: All of the Meth Alliance Committee Chairs meet quarterly and act as a Steering Committee to the Alliance.

The Meth Alliance Committees have become the backbone of the coalition.  Each committee has a Chairperson and a number of members who meet regularly.
